Jim has been in some kind of accident. With an indeterminate amount of memory loss. He can't remember how he and his bike got back to his dorm room, but he woke up on his bed when his R.A. knocked on the door to invite him to lunch. As far as I know, he's in the school's infirmary (yes, I guess they still have those) with some ice and a whole lot of pain in his jaw. If you pray, please pray for Jim. If you don't, you're excused from this post. Put your head down on your desk and take a nap.
Updates as they become available.
UPDATE 1: Jim is on his way to the emergency room with our aunt. He threw up and is really sleepy. Sounds like a concussion to me, but we'll know more soon.
UPDATE 2: Jim apparently remembers falling from his bike. He doesn't know why he fell, but he's pretty certain that no one else was involved. So, if his memory serves him, he wasn't hit by a car. We can't get them on the phone, so we think he's in with the doctor right now. His shoulder and jaw are really bothering him.
UPDATE 3: He's ok. Jim was cleared by the emergency room doctor to go home. He had a mild concussion and some serious bruising on his jaw and shoulder [I'm not sure how a head injury in which you black out for an extended period of time can be considered mild, but whatever]. He's back in his dorm and taking a couple days off from class. He remembers now that he was rounding a corner when the rear wheel of his bicycle slid out from under him and he hit the concrete. Thanks for tuning in.
I don't pray. I'd be lying if I said I did. But there's no way I could read this and put my head down and take a nap. My thoughts are with you and your family, and I hope from the bottom of my heart that Jim has a speedy recovery.
Thank you, Anne.
Whoa. Hope he's feeling better.
it's Jim's annual bash. sometimes, when he's really feeling frisky, he has a semiannual bash. he just wouldn't feel like Jim if he didn't have an annual bash. he likes to mix it up, too. this one is a real medical medley, his first concussion, jaw, shoulder, hand injury. accident reconstruction analysis reveals that, from the time he should have been on his bicycle (he crashed right a short distance from the dorm) to the time he realized he should seek medical attention, approximately 20 minutes elapsed -- during which he collected his bike, locked it up, returned to his room, waited alone, and then got help from his roommate. But does not remember any of those 20 minutes. 20 minutes. mild concussion. (I've hit my head hard a bunch of times and never had one minute of amnesia.) I guess you have to be in a coma to qualify for a more serious concussion. it would be OK to pass on the concussions in the future.
I had the same kind of bike accident back in May. Watch out for post-concussion syndrome. I was spacey and out of it for a least a week afterward. Not to mention the slow, painful, healing process for the roadrash I got on my face and shoulder. I too don't remember much about my accident. I remember wondering if I should try and wash my shoulder or not. Then my vision got blurry and I started to get a migraine. At some point I thought it might be a good idea to call a family memeber. Soooo scary!
I hope he gets better quick.
